Growing-up Online
This was a program that aired on PBS it talks about the addiction that today’s teens have on the internet and how they are spending their whole entire life being on it. This documentary follows several students of a New Jersey high school over a period of time and interviews them about what experiences they have on the Internet. Some of the students said that they are completely a different person online. They feel free and untouchable while on it while others are being bullied to the point of committing suicidal.
- The reason why I think the number of parents who reported the internet being a good thing decreased is the fear of intruders entering your house though it. I personally don’t allow my teenager son to be on the computer for more then an hour a day. With the increase of all these social media and texting messaging apps such as KIX, which the kids take advantage and text one another while in school. Several weeks ago we had an incidence where the while in class couple of girls were bulling and saying mean thing about another girl in their class while in class. The administration found out by the girl’s mom who came up to the school soon after all this started. The girl who was being bullied did the right thing by immediately texting her mom and telling her what was happening, by her doing that we where able to stop the situation from escalating to more. Because of these kinds of situation is primarily the reason why the number of parents who where okay with the prolong use of their teen using the Internet.
- Kids in today’s fast pace world where everything is provided here and now it’s hard for them to actually take the time an open up a book and read it for a report. They want to be able to get on that Internet and get busy with social media and the last minute go on Sparknote and copy and paste. With every school there are different policies. I work in an elementary school where the students are just learning how to write a report and we can see it quickly when a student copied and pasted straight from the web, as a teacher we know what they are capable of writing. We try to explain to our students the important of comprehending what they actually read and what is expected of them to write about.
- Yes, I believe that he did feel guilty because he knew that we really didn’t do the work. It also shows that his teacher allows him to look it up on Sparknotes and other sites.
- Nowadays anyone can become famous on the Internet. For everyone that post online videos and pictures there will always be someone out there who likes what they see and in only in they’re eyes the persona comes to live as a celebrity. With our fast pace world that person will only get their 15 minutes of fame and it will be on to the next.
- In this story a girl who is a 7th grader from a middle school in New York committed suicide in her home after she was cyber bullied. This only shows the lack of involvements with these kids. We as parents need to be an active role model in our children’s lives. http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/23/us/new-york-girl-death/
- With that quote the girl is describing Suler’s Disinhibition effect of Dissociative Anonymity. This allows them to be invisible and sense of people not knowing them. She can do and say whatever she wants without be in front of them.
- I am not much of an Internet user. To be honest I do have Facebook and intagram and on my Facebook I created it in 2007 and my friend list is still under 200 people I originally opened Facebook to get in contact with my family over seas and my friend list consist of them only. With my intagram it’s about the same. With that being said it’s boring to be on my Facebook because I hardly have time. I believe it would be easy for me to disconnect from the Internet. I wouldn’t dislike anything from disconnecting, I already am.
